ABOUT THE FREEWHEELERS

The Kootenay Freewheelers Cycling Club was established in 1991 as a volunteer run, member based not for profit organization, and incorporated as a society in 2012.

We exist to create or enhance experiences, environments, and opportunities for the Kimberley cycling community through recreational, competitive and instructional programs and events, in ways that are welcoming, inclusive, social and fun!

Our current focus is on organizing and delivering fun and especially social Mountain Bike rides, races and youth instructional programs.

Club History

The Kootenay Freewheelers was started more than thirty years ago by two school teachers who worked in Kimberley, one lived in Cranbrook and one lived in Kimberley. The club started with road rides all over the east and west Kootenays. Since then, the club has evolved to include mountain bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes.

The original vision of this club was not for an exclusive Kimberley group (nor was it to be exclusive to mountain biking), and given the founders were from both cities and the club rode throughout the Kootenays, it reasonably was originally called the Kootenay Freewheelers Bicycling Club. Today, we continue to have members that live outside of the city of Kimberley and members that coordinate rides for the club membership to other areas (far afield adventure).

FREEWHEELERS Membership and KTS Trail Pass:

All Freewheeler youth program participants must also be club members. This membership is free - but please remember to go back and register your child(ren) as club members once you have successfully registered them in a program.  Youth program participants must also purchase a Kimberley Trail Society Trail Pass (available on our site to access the trails.

The Kimberley Trail Society (KTS) is a volunteer trail organization that builds and maintains the safety of all trails in the Kimberley area.  Upon request KTS will refund  your child's trail pass fee if they take part in an organized trail maintenance night.  The Freewheelers Youth program will be hosting a maintenance night in early spring.
